Kua Guat Eng is a pioneer in the Malaysian cord blood banking industry and has more than 30 years of working experience in managing medical laboratories.
He started stem cell cryopreservation in University Hospital (‘UH’) back in the early 1990s and is amongst the stem cell pioneers of Malaysia to be send abroad to undergo training on stem cell purging using monoclonal antibody cocktail and as well as stem cell cryopreservation in 1992 at the Fred Hutchinson Hospital, Seattle, USA.
In 1995, he started cord blood cryopreservation in University Hospital on directed cord blood samples. He is also one of the first few Malaysians to be trained in cord blood cryopreservation and logistics on transportation of frozen cord blood from the New York Blood Centre.
He set up the laboratory for one of Ma laysia’s first private Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank, Cryo Cord Sdn Bhd, 5 years ago.
Kua holds a Medical Technologist (Blood Banking) from University Malaya (“UM”) and is also trained in various Apheresis Procedures (e.g. Baxter Cell Separator II, 1983; CS3000 Plus Baxter, 1991; and Haemonetics MCS3, 1993), which are essential for the adult stem cell harvesting processes.
